6/12/2006 from Paul Grasso, grandson of Domnick (aka Nick) Anicito
Paul sent this picture of the Sports Club in the late 30's.
He said Dom Anicito, his grandfather, is 3rd from the right in the back row and Lou Bernheim is 5th from the right in the same row. He also sent this transcript of
remarks by former Irvington mayor and Sports Club member Bob Miller at Lou Bernheim's funeral in 2002:
"When you get down to the Mayor, you know that you're at the end of the line
or very near the end of it. All I want to say, Louie and I go back a long
long time.about 65 years. I've listened to the words that were spoken, and I
want to say, the Rabbi did a great job, Sal, and all the others that have
spoken. They did a great job talking about a man. Now I'm going to talk
about Louie in a different vein. I won't tell the truth of all his bad
habits, because he used to give me many grey hairs. But digressing, going
back to family, the rabbi mentioned that the mother and father were in show
business, and mentioned brother, Brother Bernie, Sister Esther.
Bernie was in the service, Bernie the first time I ran into him, I ran head
on head at football practice at Irvington High School, he nearly knocked my
brains out. Next time I ran into him, I was in Arkansas, I had just washed
out of cadets, and Bernie was just graduating, Bernie left Arkansas, he
wound up bombing Germany, he got shot down, he was a prisoner of war, and he
got tired of Hitler and he escaped and he got back to our country. He was a
hero.
Now getting back to Louie. Louie joined the Marines. Joined the Marines.
Years ago he played with the Sport Club and all the Sport Club guys are here
and they know the fun we had, the abuse we did on each other, the names we
called, and it was great! because we loved each other, and we still love
each other. I gotta be careful cause I'll start crying.
Now Louie was a typical Irvingtonian. He loved the town. He REALLY loved the
town. They laugh about the town today because the schvartzes took over and
now it's not as nice as it was. My wife was killing me for saying that but
it's the truth.
Now Louie was a guy that was a real.American! A real American, and I said,
and Irvingtonian, a guy who gave of himself. You listen to all these people
talk, you listen to this organization, you listen to that organization, you
listen to the veterans, you listen to the Athletic Club, you listen to the
kids. They mention that he was 25 years on the Board of Directors of the
Irvington P.A.L. I was with him, I know all the time he spent, WITH the
kids, WITH the people, WITH the veterans, he gave of HIMSELF... a typical
good American, raised in a town in America, who exemplifies the best in
everyone. And he gave of himself, not that he was wealthy, whether he was
poor it didn't matter, he gave of himself. That's the best thing I can say
for Louie, and Louie I want to say this to YOU the Sports Club are coming,
one by one..full practice pretty soon!
God Bless You." - Bob Miller, 2002
